It is possible to show originality and independence from the customs of society by presenting a gift that’s unique by its production and contents, for example a work of art. But giving a work of art means something else: you share with the other the pleasure and the magic of each work that is conceptualised and produced by the artist. In this consideration you will find no cultural aspect, neither an economical one, but a “sentimental” one, because a painting can become a presence in the life of each of us, like only a living creature can do. I know people who went through a depression because they had their paintings stolen.
Art is beauty and pleasure, and it is only normal that we want to give it to people who we love the most. I myself bought my first painting for my mother, it was a reproduction, but at the age of eight and a half I didn’t now the difference. All work I present is of value, even if the price is low sometimes. You can take advantage of this by spending less, knowing that purchased art will see its value more than doubled, as was the case with Chast or Bailly.
